IV. PREREADING. CULTURAL NOTE. STROKES
Strokes are a loss of brain function caused by an interruption in the supply of blood to a part of the brain. This interruption can be caused by bleeding or a blockage, such as from a blood clot. Brain tissue is killed or severely damaged. In industrialized countries, stroke is the third leading cause of death and the biggest cause of adult disability. It is caused by a variety of factors that damage blood vessels, although genetic weaknesses are also a factor. Smoking increases the risk for strokes. High cholesterol is another common risk factor, as are diabetes, age, and high blood pressure.
V. READING. Read carefully the next dialogue, then answer the questions.
Uncle’s Mike Stroke Doctor: Well, Tom, you’re certainly healthy enough to be on the swim team. I’ll sign that form for you. Tom: Thanks, doctor. Uh… can I just ask you a question? It’s not about my health, but… Doctor: Sure, Tom. What is it? Tom: Well, my Uncle Mike just had a stroke… Doctor: Sorry to hear that, Tom. How is the doing? Tom: Ok, apparently. No really serious damage, except for some balance problems. A little weakness in one arm, too. Doctor: He’s very lucky. Tom: Yeah. He is. But here’s the weird part. My aunt says the stroke made him forget that he smokes… smoked… whatever. Is that even possible? Doctor: I know it sounds strange, Tom, but yes, it’s possible. If a stroke damages a little part of the brain called the insula, it can happen. Tom: Incredible. Doctor: Your uncle probably didn’t actually forget that he smoked. What probably happened is that it just stopped seeming pleasurable to him. The insula is what we call a pleasure center. If it’s damaged, you might stop associating things like the taste or smell of cigarette smoke with pleasant feelings. Tom: So he remembers smoking but it doesn’t sound good to him anymore. It’s like he lost his taste for cigarettes. Doctor: That’s right. Tom: So, in a way, he is lucky he had the stroke. Doctor: Well, in a way, but strokes are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. They are a form of brain injury. They almost always cause a lot more damage than your uncle seems to have suffered. The really lucky thing is that he wasn’t paralyzed or killed. Tom: Yeah, I know. When I first heard he had a stroke, I thought maybe he’d be unable to walk or talk or something. Doctor: Well, anyway, I’m glad he doesn’t have a smoking habit anymore. Maybe that will reduce his chances of having another stroke.
